I remember one day when I was very young, probably 5 or 6, I was sitting in the kitchen of my old house looking at the vinyl floor peeling up from the floor, the dirt collected around the baseboards, the old, half-working stove - then I looked up at my dad, who was washing dishes and looking out the windows and said, “I think I love you more than I love mom.” I had been wanting to tell this to him for days ever since I had decided. I was really nervous, and didn’t want him to be mad. He looked shocked and tried to explain that I shouldn’t say that because mom works hard for us. I didn’t believe him, and I don’t think he believed himself.

Memories with him are becoming more and more elusive, and I’m glad when I can hold on to a few vivid ones.

Upside? GPA still above a 3.9. Yessss.

1.) Registered for GRE in August

2.) Did more research on grad schools. I have my top four:

NYU

UC Berkeley

Columbia

UPenn

(Big hopes much?)

3.) Shopped for the first time in a long time. It felt good not spending all my money on bills.

Just to complete my Brazilian visa app for this summer, and to apply to internships before I leave. Things are falling into place, and I’m incredibly lucky that I’m doing something I love.

When people belittle my field of study as if studying Anthropology (specifically structural racial and economic oppression) is a useless thing to study.

Look; No, I will not be a medical doctor. No, I will not be a businesswoman. No, I will not be an engineer. I will, however, be a conscious person who understands my privilege, can recognize oppression and privilege of others, and will fight to help lift everyone out from under oppression.

Does that make me stupid for studying Anthro/Urb Studies? No. Does that mean that I’m taking the easy way out of getting a “real” degree? Fuck no. I work incredibly hard to maintain my GPA, I spend practically my entire life working and doing homework. I am taking the hard road by doing something where I will need to pursue a PhD, and do research to ensure my career is stable.

Don’t belittle me, my efforts, or my passion. You might think it’s funny, but it’s really fucking aggravating.
